Marks Barfield was the winner of an invited Plymouth Development Corporation’s competition to design a footbridge in an area of outstanding historic beauty. The concept for the bridge uses 100mm thick granite slabs (a local material) supported on a series of stressed stainless steel cables. The stress ribbon form allows an exceptionally low depth to span ratio to be achieved – 1 : 240, creating an incredibly slender deck that seems to be almost floating and weightless in appearance.
