Landmark Wales

Red Cloud, addresses Wales’ need to celebrate its culture, representing its history, diversity, flexibility and strength. It creates a clear marking point at the Second Severn Crossing site into Wales.

The design originated from the idea of a flock of birds flying over a farmer’s field, and then evolved into a soaring community of individuals or ‘compatriots’ in the sky. The concept is derived from the name the Welsh people gave to themselves, ‘Cymru’ which means compatriot in welsh.

Each is an individual, yet it moves as one. Seeming to dance in the wind like a flock of birds, with arms outstretched as if flying free in a childlike gesture of pure joy. All the figures are orientated towards Wales with the head of the ‘Cloud’ raised to the highest point.
