The construction of the proposed Thames Gateway Bridge will render existing radar coverage for safe navigation for vessels between Margate to Blackwells Stairs. MBA have designed a striking replacement facility in the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich to ensure adequate radar coverage both during construction and after completion of the proposed bridge.
The architectural design has been developed from an understanding of the heritage and historical associations of the Royal Arsenal site, along with the engineering requirements of the radar mast, resulting in an innovative solution appropriate to its site and its function. The design reflects qualities derived from phenomena associated with the munitions industry, ie the blast pattern from a canon, and the rifling pattern inside a gun barrel.
