Royal Opening for the Lightbox

29 February 2008

Marks Barfield’s new community cultural art centre in Woking ‘The Lightbox’ had its Official Royal Opening on 28th February by HRH The Duke of Kent.

Since first opening its doors to the public in September 2007, The Lightbox has become a huge local success.  Annual visitor numbers were predicted to be 50,000 yet within the first four months there were over 42,000.  The Lightbox’s first exhibition, featuring works from the creators of Wallace and Gromit, proved a massive hit with visitors of all ages.  They are expecting equal success with the current exhibition 2D - 3D: Discover the Art of Sculpture.

In the brief period since opening, The Lightbox has been nominated for two prestigious awards.  It has been selected as a nominee for the most prestigious arts prize in the country, The Art Fund Prize, 2008.

The Lightbox has also been short listed for the 2008 Civic Trust Awards that highlight design excellence within the built environment.
